Common skiing and snowboarding injuries

Skiing and snowboarding are both sports that unfortunately can result in a variety of injuries. Unfortunately, they don’t tend to be minor ones, either. When speed and vainglory combine with slippery ice and slushy snow, there’s definitely a likelihood of something going wrong. Here are some common snowboarding and skiing injuries you might have come across, or have even experienced yourself.
One common form of skiing injury is concussion. This can occur during a fall, or in case of collision with a hard object such as a tree. Wearing a helmet is one way of reducing the risk that you might receive a concussion when skiing or snowboarding.
Other commonly seen injuries involve the knees. Given the side-to-side motion common in both skiing and snowboarding, it only makes sense that the knee might be affected. Unfortunately, the knee bears the brunt of the twisting and turning motions, and you can find that you might end up with ligament damage in the case of a twist or a fall.
You might find that your shoulders also sustain some damage after a long skiing run, or particularly after a bad fall. Neck and shoulder injuries are unfortunately quite common, with dislocations and damaged rotator cuffs quite common.
Broken bones, particularly in the legs and wrists, are also commonly seen amongst skiers and snowboarders. Unfortunately, any sport that involves traveling quickly down a slippery incline can increase your risk of breaking a bone!
Sunburn is another common, although somewhat less serious, ailment that you might experience during your winter sports fun. Try to keep your skin covered up where possible, and wear zinc or sunscreen on exposed skin. This one, at least, is an easy injury to avoid.
When skiing or snowboarding, try to take as many safety precautions as you can in order to avoid injury. While there’s no way of reducing the risk of injury to zero, you can at least make sure that you’re as safe as you can reasonably be.
