Snowboard Selection for the Beginner
If you are just starting out with snowboarding and have no idea how to pick a board, we have a few tips for you.
1. What size board do you need? The trick to selecting the right size snowboard for an individual is by taking the board you are considering and standing the board straight up with the tip of it in the air. The tip should basically stop at your nose. This is the right size for you.
2. Does weight determine board size? Some disagree about this fact, however if you are a heavier person your board should definitely be a longer board. This having been said, the new boarder should consider a smaller board to start with. The smaller boards are easier to manage and maneuver. The better you become with the board and the faster you want to go, the longer your board should be.
3. What can I use for trick riding? Any rider who is interested in stunt riding, spinning and park riding will want to stick with the shorter more easily maneuvered boards.
4. Where do I get the speed? If you want to fly down the trail and are more interested in the powder down the slope, you will want to go with a longer board. Longer boards make for higher speeds.
5. Does the width of the board matter? Yes, the width of the board is important. People who have larger feet will want to consider a wider board. Those with large boots, above size 10, should discuss with a sales person the options with wide snowboards made especially for those with a larger boot size.
6. Do I need to spend a lot? If you are a new boarder you may want to look at some of the less expensive packages. These are typically set up for beginners and are often a great bargain. When you are sure that you are going so stick with it, look at some higher grade boards. The better the quality of the materials the higher the price will of course be.
